The National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) at The University of Southern Mississippi will be hosting the 2017 National Marathon and Running Events Safety and Security Summit on December 5-7 in Orlando, FL. The main objective of the Summit is to address the key critical safety and security challenges facing marathons and running events and through a formal process develop the fourth edition of the " Safety and Security Best Practices" Guide for Marathon and Running Events.
These events draw large numbers of spectators, making safety and security a top priority for race organizers, public safety, and host communities. High profile events give rise to a host of potential risks and threats that must be addressed to ensure the safety and security of people, property, and infrastructure. The “Safety and Security Best Practices” provides a comprehensive set of recommendations of important planning components and implementation strategies for safety and security operations at road race and running events.
Prior to the Summit, NCS4 will have completed a compliance survey of the 3rd Edition of the Marathon and Running Events Safety and Security “Best Practices” to test the validity and reliability of each best practice. During this Summit, the attendees will be presented with the finding of the research. The results of the compliance survey will provide for the basis for enhancements made to the 4th edition (2018), which includes addressing issues of scalability for race/event size.
During this year’s NCS4 Conference we concentrated on RESILIENCE, so during this our summit we will consider how resilience factors into each of the topical areas.
